Hematite No. 16: the facts

Why this stone is listed on its own

Each stone in this collection is listed on its own because no two are identical — colour, surface and polish differ from piece to piece, so the one in the photograph is the one that ships.

What decides the price

Lustre and polish, freedom from chips, size and the quality of the cut — natural hematite is inexpensive, so check it is not magnetic "hematine" Current market rates for every stone we carry are in our gemstone price guide, and the rest of this collection is at Hematite.

Checking the stone before you pay

Hold it against a white background in daylight to judge colour honestly, look through a 10x loupe for growth features and small natural inclusions (glass shows round bubbles and swirl lines instead), and ask for the weight on a scale in front of you. For anything expensive, a report from an independent gemmological laboratory is the only way to be certain of the species and any treatment.

Who wears it

Mars. It is traditionally worn on a ring, bracelet or tasbeeh; it is heavy, so smaller stones are more comfortable These are traditions rather than tested effects; what we stand behind is the stone itself.

Care

Hematite can scratch and may rust if left wet; wipe dry after washing and store away from harder stones.
