Hematite 5 Carat: the facts

What 5 carat means here

Carat is weight rather than width, so this hematite reads larger in a shallow cabochon than in a deep cut. At 5 carat it suits an everyday ring in silver or gold. To convert from ratti, see our ratti to carat guide.

How this price was set

We checked what hematite actually sells for in Pakistan — 59 listings with a stated weight — and took the middle of that market at PKR 182 per carat. Lustre and polish, freedom from chips, size and the quality of the cut — natural hematite is inexpensive, so check it is not magnetic "hematine" The full picture is in our gemstone price guide.

Who wears it

Mars; traditionally a grounding and protective stone. It is traditionally worn on a ring, bracelet or tasbeeh; it is heavy, so smaller stones are more comfortable These are traditions rather than tested effects; what we guarantee is the stone itself.

Checking it before you pay

Ask for the weight on a jeweller's scale in front of you, hold the stone against a white background in daylight to judge the colour honestly, and look through a 10x loupe: natural stones show growth features and small inclusions, while glass shows round bubbles and swirl marks. Anything sold as rare or certified should come with a report from an independent gemmological laboratory naming the mineral, the weight and any treatment. We put the exact weight on every listing for that reason.

Care

Hematite can scratch and may rust if left wet; wipe dry after washing and store away from harder stones.
