A good gemstone can last generations with a little care. Here is how to keep your stones clean, safe and brilliant.

Everyday Care

  • Put jewellery on last — after perfume, lotion and hairspray.
  • Take rings off before washing dishes, cleaning or heavy work.
  • Wipe stones with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wearing.

Cleaning by Stone Type

Hard stones like ruby, sapphire and yellow sapphire can be cleaned with mild soapy water and a soft brush. Softer or porous stones — opal, pearl and feroza — should only be wiped gently and kept away from heat, chemicals and long soaking.

Storage

Store pieces separately in soft pouches or a lined box so harder stones do not scratch softer ones. Keep pearls and opals away from very dry environments.

What to Avoid

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, bleach and harsh chemicals — especially on opal, pearl, feroza and emerald. When in doubt, a soft cloth and mild soap is always safe.
