Checking the stone before you pay

Hold it against a white background in daylight to judge colour honestly, look through a 10x loupe for growth features and small natural inclusions (glass shows round bubbles and swirl lines instead), and ask for the weight on a scale in front of you. For anything expensive, a report from an independent gemmological laboratory is the only way to be certain of the species and any treatment.

Care

Topaz is hard but has perfect cleavage — avoid sharp knocks. Clean with warm soapy water; keep irradiated blue topaz out of prolonged sunlight.
