Yellow sapphire (pukhraj) has one of the widest price spreads of any stone sold in Pakistan. Two stones that look similar on a phone screen can be worlds apart in value once you know about colour depth, origin and treatment. This guide explains those drivers so you can judge a quote.
Colour: from lemon to golden
Yellow sapphire ranges from pale lemon to deep golden or canary yellow. A clean, bright, well-saturated yellow without brown or green tints is the most valued. Very pale stones are much cheaper. Check the colour in daylight and indoor light, and make sure it is even across the face.
Treatment: heated, unheated and diffused
- Unheated pukhraj with good colour carries a clear premium, and it is what many astrology buyers specifically ask for.
- Heated stones are common and stable, and cost less than unheated stones of the same look.
- Beryllium-diffused stones have colour added by a high-temperature process, often giving a strong orange-yellow. They should be much cheaper and must be disclosed.
Only a lab can reliably confirm treatment, so get the seller's statement in writing and arrange testing for an expensive stone.
Origin
Sri Lanka is the best-known source of yellow sapphire, and "Ceylon pukhraj" is a familiar phrase in the trade. Thailand, Madagascar and Australia also supply the market. Origin can influence price, but only on the strength of a lab report, not a verbal claim.
Clarity, cut and size
Aim for a stone that looks clean to the naked eye. A good cut shows even brightness without a dull window in the centre. Size multiplies everything else: large, clean, well-coloured stones rise in price per carat.
Imitations
Yellow glass, citrine and yellow topaz are all sold as pukhraj at times. Glass shows round bubbles and warms quickly; citrine and topaz are softer and lack sapphire's brilliance, and a gem tester tells them apart. A flawless, vivid and cheap stone is a warning sign.
Durability
At 9 on the Mohs scale yellow sapphire is ideal for a ring worn every day.
Pukhraj in tradition
In South Asian astrology yellow sapphire is linked with Jupiter (Brihaspati) and is traditionally worn for wisdom, prosperity and good counsel. These are beliefs, not promised results; agree weight, metal and finger with your astrologer. Our rashi guide sets out common pairings.
