Natural Red Agate in Pakistan
Red agate, or surkh aqeeq, spans the warm end of the agate family, from deep brick red to the bright orange-red the trade calls carnelian. It is a favourite for signet rings and looks especially rich against silver. Being a quartz, it is hard enough to wear daily without the chips that catch softer stones.

Is It Carnelian or Red Agate?
The names overlap. Carnelian generally describes more translucent, orange-leaning material, while red agate is used for deeper, more opaque reds and banded stones. Both are the same mineral - chalcedony. A good stone is defined by even colour and the absence of chalky patches, not by which name is on the label.
Heated, Dyed or Natural?
These three are not the same thing:
- Natural colour: red from iron within the stone, as found.
- Heat-enhanced: gentle heating to deepen pale material, an old practice the trade accepts as normal. The colour runs through the stone.
- Dyed: colour added artificially, which tends to look flat, sits nearer the surface and often collects in cracks.
We tell you which applies to each stone, where known, rather than leaving you to guess.
Checking a Surkh Aqeeq at Home
Hold the stone edge-on against a bright light. Natural red agate glows warmly at its thinnest edges and usually shows some variation or faint banding; dyed material looks uniformly flat. It should feel cool and dense, and at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it will resist a steel point. If you would like further reassurance, independent lab testing can be arranged on request.
What to Look For
Choose a stone with a rich, even colour, good translucency (especially for carnelian) and a clean polish without pits. For a signet, a flat, even surface matters; for a cabochon ring, a smooth dome that catches the light.
Tradition and Wear
Red aqeeq has a long history in the subcontinent and the Middle East as a ring and seal stone, and in many traditions it is associated with courage and vitality. These are traditional beliefs rather than guaranteed effects. Clean it with lukewarm water and a soft cloth, and keep it away from bleach.
