Choosing a good Jamunia: what to look at first
With amethyst, colour does most of the work. The most valued stones show a saturated, even purple with flashes of red-violet under warm light, while lighter lilac stones (often called Rose de France) are softer and usually more affordable. After colour, look at:
- Clarity - amethyst is commonly eye-clean, so visible cracks or cloudiness should be reflected in a lower rate.
- Colour zoning - natural stones often show bands of darker and lighter purple. A well-cut stone hides this when viewed from the top.
- Cut - a lively, symmetrical cut makes a mid-tone stone look brighter than a dull, deep-bellied one.
- Size - large clean amethyst is readily available, so the per-carat rate rises more gently with size than it does for sapphire or emerald.
Each listing's per-carat rate is the price divided by carat weight.
About amethyst
Amethyst is crystalline quartz coloured by traces of iron and natural irradiation in the earth. It measures 7 on the Mohs scale, tough enough for rings worn regularly. Fine material comes from Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia, among other sources, and the colour can range from pale lavender to a dark, almost grape purple.
Natural amethyst versus glass and lab-made stones
Glass imitations are usually flawless, may contain round gas bubbles and warm up quickly in your hand. Natural amethyst feels cool, often shows slight colour zoning and may carry small natural inclusions. Lab-grown amethyst also exists and can look very similar, so a certificate is the reliable answer for an important purchase. A certificate of authenticity is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged.
Amethyst in tradition
Amethyst is the February birthstone. In South Asian astrological tradition Jamunia is associated with Saturn (Shani) and is often worn as a gentler alternative to blue sapphire; it is traditionally linked with calm, clear thinking and restful sleep. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects, so if you are choosing it for astrological reasons, speak to an astrologer you trust about weight and finger.
Caring for your stone
Very strong, prolonged sunlight or heat can slowly fade some amethyst, so store it out of direct sun. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
