Natural Moh-e-Najaf Stone in Pakistan
Moh-e-Najaf, meaning "hair of Najaf", is clear quartz threaded with fine golden or dark needles that look like strands of hair frozen in ice. Known in English as rutilated quartz, no two stones are alike, because no two sets of needles are the same.

Where the "Hair" Comes From
The needles are rutile, a titanium dioxide mineral that crystallised inside the quartz as it grew. Far from being flaws, they are the whole reason the stone is chosen. Golden rutile is the most popular, but red, copper and black needles also occur, and all are equally natural.
Moh-e-Najaf vs Dur-e-Najaf
These two names are often mixed up, but they describe opposites:
| Dur-e-Najaf | Moh-e-Najaf | |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Clear, colourless quartz | Clear quartz with visible hair-like needles |
| What buyers want | As clean as possible | Striking, well-placed inclusions |
A moh-e-najaf without needles would simply be dur-e-najaf. If a seller uses the names interchangeably, ask questions.
Choosing a Beautiful Stone
- Needle quality: fine, distinct needles that stand out clearly against a bright background.
- Spacing: a few striking threads with clear space around them usually look better than a dense, matted cloud.
- Body clarity: apart from the rutile, the quartz should be clean and transparent.
- Cut: moh-e-najaf is usually faceted rather than cut as a cabochon, so light passes through and makes the needles glow.
Since appeal depends on the pattern, look closely at the photographs of each individual stone.
Natural or Imitation?
Natural rutile needles are straight or gently curved, vary in thickness and lie at different depths in the stone. Glass imitations with embedded fibres tend to show uniform strands, round gas bubbles and a slightly warm, light feel. Real quartz is cool to the touch and, at 7 on the Mohs scale, resists scratching by steel.
Wearing and Care
At 7 on the Mohs scale, quartz is hard enough for a ring worn regularly, and it is more forgiving than topaz because it has no cleavage. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Many people in Pakistan choose moh-e-najaf for its spiritual associations with Najaf; this is a matter of tradition and personal belief, and we make no claims about effects.
