What Creates the Sparkle

Sunstone is a feldspar. Inside it, minute flat platelets of copper or hematite lie aligned in the same direction, and when light hits them at the right angle they reflect at once, producing a glittering shimmer. Gemologists call this aventurescence. Body colour ranges from pale champagne through peach to deep orange-red, and the strongest flashes usually appear in the warmer tones.

How to Judge a Sunstone

1. Tilt it under one light. Use a single bulb or sunlight and rock the stone slowly.
2. Check the spread. In a good stone the glitter covers the whole face, not just one patch.
3. Check the angle range. Fine sunstone flashes across a wide range of angles; weaker material lights up only at one precise tilt.
4. Look at the body colour. Pick a tone you like - warmer bodies tend to carry the boldest flash.

Sunstone Is Not Goldstone

This is the most common mix-up. Goldstone is man-made glass with copper flecks stirred in; its sparkle is dense, uniform and obviously artificial under magnification, and it is worth very little. Natural sunstone is a mineral with visible internal structure and an uneven, directional flash that changes as you move it. We sell the natural mineral only.

Wearing and Care

At 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, sunstone is a little softer than quartz, and like all feldspars it has cleavage. That makes it best for a ring you remove before rough work, or for a pendant, where it catches even more light. A bezel setting is safer than prongs. Clean it with lukewarm water and a soft cloth and avoid ultrasonic cleaners.

Sunstone in Tradition

In various folk traditions sunstone is linked with warmth, optimism and the energy of the sun. These are beliefs rather than guaranteed effects, and many buyers choose it simply for its unusual glow.
