Skardu is the main town of Baltistan, spread across a wide valley where the Indus flows between high, dry mountains. It is the starting point for expeditions to K2 and the Baltoro glacier, and for trips to the Deosai plains, Shigar and Khaplu. Balti culture, with its own language and old wooden mosques and forts, gives the region a character of its own. Baltistan is also one of the world's best-known sources of gem crystals. The pegmatites around Shigar and the side valleys have produced aquamarine, topaz, tourmaline and garnet that collectors seek out. Baltistan's gem heritage

Aquamarine is the stone most closely tied to the area: long blue-green crystals from the Shigar valley and nearby are known among collectors around the world. Local miners and traders often handle crystals and rough rather than cut stones, so the stones you see in Skardu bazaar may be specimens, not finished gems.

Stones Skardu buyers ask for

• Aquamarine (beruj): the stone of the valley, chosen by many as a gift. Pale colour is natural; very strong blue is often heated.
• Topaz: colourless to golden material comes from the same pegmatites. Bright blue topaz is treated.
• Tourmaline and garnet: colourful and hard-wearing, well suited to rings.
• Aqeeq and dur-e-Najaf: ring stones of Muslim tradition, worn by many in Baltistan. See Islamic gemstones.
• Neelam and yaqoot: chosen on astrological advice by some families.

Beliefs about stones are traditions, not promises. For religious questions, ask a scholar you trust.

How to check a stone in Skardu

Buying near the source is exciting, but it carries its own risks. Rough and specimens are priced on beauty and rarity, and cut stones need the same checks as anywhere else:

1. Ask whether the stone is cut locally or brought in. Some cut "Skardu" stones are imported material.
2. Look for treatment. Heated aquamarine and irradiated topaz are common and acceptable when disclosed, but should not carry the price of natural colour.
3. Check for glass. Very clean, large, cheap stones with tiny round bubbles under a loupe are glass.
4. Agree the weight unit. The gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat; the sunari ratti is about 0.61 carat. Use the carat to ratti converter to compare.

We dispatch from Lahore within 1 to 2 working days, and the insured, tracked courier normally delivers within about 7 working days. All our stones are natural, with known treatments disclosed. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged; see the authenticity page. Unused stones may be returned within 7 days of delivery under the return policy.

Choosing aquamarine for daily wear

Aquamarine rates about 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, so it suits rings worn every day, but it can still chip if knocked hard. A slightly deeper colour often reads better in a ring than a very pale stone, and a clean stone shows its colour more evenly than an included one. Bezel settings protect the edges well.
