Chalcedony stones
A family stone
Chalcedony is the parent name for a whole group of microcrystalline quartz gems. Many stones Pakistani buyers already know belong to it: Aqeeq (agate and carnelian), Shajri Aqeeq (moss agate) and bloodstone are all chalcedony. When a jeweller says "chalcedony" on its own, though, they usually mean the plain, unbanded stone in soft, even colours, and that is what this page focuses on.
Colours you will see
- Blue chalcedony - a misty, soothing sky blue and the most popular colour.
- White and grey - understated, elegant shades that suit silver settings.
- Lavender and purple tones - softer and less common.
What affects value
Chalcedony is an affordable gem, but the better pieces stand out clearly. Look for an even colour without blotches, a soft glow when light passes through (good translucency), a smooth polish with no cracks, and a nicely proportioned cabochon. Natural, untreated colour is preferred, and larger clean stones cost more. On every listing, the per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.
Dyed stone, glass or the real thing?
Because chalcedony is slightly porous, it is often dyed, especially in strong blues and greens that look almost electric. Natural colours are gentle and slightly variable. Glass imitations tend to be more transparent, may show round bubbles and lack the waxy lustre of real chalcedony. We inspect each stone and disclose any treatment we know of; a certificate of authenticity is available on request.
Durability and care
At around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, chalcedony is hard and tough enough for everyday rings. Wash it in mild soapy water, avoid harsh cleaners that can affect dyed stones, and store it separately from harder gems.
Tradition and belief
Chalcedony has long been regarded as a calming, gentle stone. In some South Asian astrological traditions it is linked with the Moon (Chandra) and worn for calm and measured speech. These are beliefs rather than guaranteed effects, and many people choose it simply for its soft colour.
