Popular tourmaline types
- Green tourmaline (verdelite) - from fresh mint to deep green; among the most widely worn.
- Pink and red tourmaline (rubellite) - soft pink to intense raspberry red. Rubellite is the name for the deepest reds that keep their colour in all lighting.
- Blue tourmaline (indicolite) - less common and highly sought-after.
- Bi-colour and watermelon - two or more colours in one stone; watermelon tourmaline has a pink centre and green rim.
- Neon blue-green tourmaline - copper-bearing "Paraiba-type" stones, the rarest and most valuable of all.
Tourmaline from the region
Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, including the Gilgit-Baltistan region, produce attractive tourmaline, alongside Brazil and several African countries. Where we know a stone's origin, the listing tells you.
What to compare
Colour is the main value driver: vivid, saturated pinks, reds, blues and neon tones cost the most, while very dark or greyish stones are cheaper. Tourmaline is strongly pleochroic, so colour can look darker along the length of the crystal; a good cutter orients the stone for the best face-up colour. Green and blue stones are usually expected to be fairly clean, while pink and red tourmaline often contains natural inclusions that the market accepts. For bi-colour stones, a crisp, balanced division between colours is prized. Size raises the per-carat rate. Each listing's per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.
About the mineral
Tourmaline is a complex boron silicate family, and its chemistry explains the huge colour range. It rates 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a practical choice for rings. Some tourmaline is heated to lighten or brighten colour; we disclose this when known.
Genuine tourmaline or substitute?
Natural tourmaline feels cool and solid, often shows a noticeable colour change when viewed from the side versus the top, and may contain fine natural inclusions. Glass looks the same from every angle and may show bubbles. Pink tourmaline can be confused with kunzite or pink topaz, and green with peridot, so a certificate of authenticity is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged.
Tradition and belief
Tourmaline is an October birthstone. It is traditionally seen as a protective, balancing stone, with each colour carrying its own meaning, green for growth and pink for love and calm. Some South Asian astrologers link it with Mercury (Budh). These are beliefs, not guaranteed outcomes.
Caring for your tourmaline
Clean tourmaline with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid sudden temperature changes and ultrasonic cleaners for included stones.
