Sahiwal, known as Montgomery until 1966, is a farming city in the heart of central Punjab, between the Ravi and the Sutlej. Its name is familiar well beyond Pakistan through the Sahiwal breed of dairy cattle. Checking a stone in Sahiwal

Stone sellers gather around shrine fairs and the city's main bazaars, and you will see trays of aqeeq and feroza at very low prices. Some are honest, some are dyed or glass. Before paying:

1. Look along the cracks for dye. Colour that pools in fractures is a sign of dyed agate. Our aqeeq real or fake guide shows what to look for.
2. Test feroza gently. Natural turquoise often has a web of matrix lines. Very uniform blue with no texture may be dyed howlite or plastic. Read real vs fake feroza.
3. Weigh by carat or the standard ratti. The gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat, while the goldsmith's sunari ratti is about 0.61 carat. Use the carat to ratti converter before comparing per-ratti prices.
4. Ask for the treatment in writing. Stabilised feroza and heated pukhraj are acceptable when disclosed.
