Natural Sulemani Agate in Pakistan
Sulemani aqeeq is the banded black-and-white agate worn across the subcontinent and the Middle East for centuries. Its appeal is all in the pattern - straight stripes, concentric rings or the striking "eye" stones - so this page focuses on how to read the banding and spot surface-printed fakes.

Same Stone, Special Pattern
Sulemani agate is the same chalcedony as every other aqeeq. What makes it sulemani is its contrasting layers of black (or dark brown) and white, laid down as silica slowly filled a cavity in volcanic rock. Patterns fall into a few broad types:
- Parallel bands - straight, even stripes across the stone.
- Concentric bands - rings within rings that follow the shape of the original cavity.
- Eye stones - banding that closes into a complete circle, the most distinctive and sought-after pattern.
How to Judge the Banding
The most desirable stones have crisp, high-contrast bands with clean edges, cut so the pattern sits centred and symmetrical on the cabochon. Blurred or muddy banding, or a pattern that runs awkwardly off one edge, is far more common and worth much less. With sulemani, the skill of the cutter matters even more than with a plain aqeeq, because a poor cut wastes a good pattern.
Real Banding vs Dyed or Printed Copies
Turn the stone over and look at its sides and back. Natural banding runs right through the stone, so you can follow it around the girdle and onto the reverse. Printed or surface-dyed imitations show the pattern only on the polished face. Many black-and-white agates have had their dark layers deepened by dyeing, which is a common practice; we state any treatment we know of. A genuine sulemani is hard, at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, and feels cool and dense in the hand.
Why People Wear Sulemani
Sulemani aqeeq is traditionally worn for protection and grounding, and it remains one of the most frequently gifted stones in Pakistan. Others simply love its graphic black-and-white look, which suits a plain silver bezel better than almost any other stone. These associations are tradition and belief, not promised outcomes. Care is simple: lukewarm water, a soft cloth and no bleach.
