What makes Welo opal different
Most Ethiopian opal comes from volcanic rock in the Welo region, found in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Compared with classic Australian opal, it often shows broad, bright flashes on a light body, and many stones show colour from every angle. That brightness at a fair cost is why it has become a popular first opal for buyers in Pakistan.
Hydrophane opal and water
Many Welo opals are hydrophane: the stone is slightly porous and can absorb water. When it does, it may turn clear or cloudy and the play of colour can fade for a while. As the stone dries out slowly at room temperature, usually over a few days, it normally returns to its old look. This is a natural property, not a defect, but it shapes how you care for the stone.
- Do not soak it, and take it off before wudu, bathing, washing dishes or swimming.
- Keep oils, perfume, creams and soap away, since a porous stone can take them in and stain.
- Clean it with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or steam.
- Avoid strong heat and sudden temperature changes.
How to choose an Ethiopian opal
Brightness and colours
Brightness of the play of colour matters most. Red and orange flashes are rarer than blue and green, and a stone that shows several colours at once ranks higher.
Pattern and body
Large, rolling flashes and named patterns such as harlequin or honeycomb add value. A clear "crystal" body lets colour glow from inside; a white body gives a softer look. Darker Welo bodies exist but are uncommon, so ask whether a dark stone has been smoke-treated, a known treatment we disclose.
Soundness
Turn the stone under light and look for fine surface cracks, called crazing. A sound, well-domed cabochon is worth more than a flat or cracked one.
Ethiopian or Australian opal?
Ethiopian opal gives strong colour on a lighter body and needs care with water. Australian opal is generally non-hydrophane, more stable in daily wear, and includes the dark and black opal types. Compare both in our opal collection. If you want a soft glow without play of colour, see moonstone or labradorite.
Opal in tradition
Opal is an October birthstone, and in South Asian astrology it is traditionally linked with Venus (Shukra). These are beliefs, not promised effects. Read more in our guide to wearing opal.
