Types of saltwater pearl

Akoya

Usually white to cream with a pink or silver overtone, round, and known for a sharp, mirror-like lustre.

Tahitian

Naturally dark pearls in grey, green, aubergine and peacock shades, grown in black-lipped oysters.

South Sea

Large white or golden pearls with a soft, deep glow, among the most valued cultured pearls.

Natural saltwater pearls

Pearls formed entirely by chance are very rare today. The Gulf pearl beds once supplied the "Basra" pearls long prized in South Asia. Most saltwater pearls sold now are cultured, which are real pearls grown by an oyster. Our listings will say whether a pearl is natural or cultured.

What sets the value

Lustre comes first, then surface quality, shape, colour and overtone, and finally size. Saltwater cultured pearls often have a bead nucleus with a nacre coat around it, so nacre thickness matters too: thin nacre can look dull and wear through over time. Read what decides a pearl's price.

Saltwater or freshwater?

Saltwater pearls usually show sharper lustre and rounder shapes, at a higher cost. Freshwater pearls are softer in lustre, come in more shapes and are more affordable.

Imitations to watch for

Shell pearls, glass beads with a pearly coating and plastic are common. Real pearls feel slightly gritty against a tooth, vary slightly in size and colour, and feel cool at first. Coatings on imitations often chip near the drill hole. A certificate will be available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged.

Pearl in tradition

Pearl is a June birthstone, and in Vedic astrology it is traditionally linked with the Moon. These are beliefs, not promised effects.

Saltwater Pearl questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

What is a saltwater pearl?

A saltwater pearl grows inside an oyster in the sea. Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea pearls are the main types.

Do you have saltwater pearls in stock?

Not yet. We are sourcing them, and you can send us a WhatsApp message to be contacted when suitable pearls arrive.

What is a Basra pearl?

Basra pearl is the traditional South Asian name for natural pearls from the Gulf pearl beds. Genuine natural pearls are very rare today.

Are cultured saltwater pearls fake?

No. A cultured pearl is grown by a real oyster after a farmer places a nucleus, so it is a real pearl made of nacre.

Why do saltwater pearls cost more than freshwater pearls?

Oysters usually produce one pearl at a time and the lustre is often sharper, so supply is smaller and prices are higher.

What is the price of saltwater pearl per ratti in Pakistan?

In the October 2026 edition of our listings, natural saltwater pearl works out at about Rs 2,700 to Rs 2,700 per ratti (Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,000 per carat). Each stone's own price is on its listing.

How many carats is one ratti of saltwater pearl?

One standard gem ratti is 0.91 carat (about 0.182 g), whatever the stone. The jeweller's sunari ratti is smaller, about 0.61 carat, so always ask which ratti a quote uses.
