How to pick a beautiful malachite
With malachite, the pattern is the product. When comparing stones, look for:
- Crisp banding - well-defined concentric rings, "eyes" or flowing stripes with strong contrast between light and dark green.
- Rich colour - a deep, vivid green rather than a dull or greyish tone.
- A high polish - good malachite takes a silky, almost glassy shine.
- Sound surface - no pits, cracks or filled holes on the face.
- Size and shape - larger, well-shaped cabochons cost more.
Malachite is priced per piece, and on each listing the per-carat rate is simply price divided by carat weight.
About malachite
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral, which is where its intense green comes from. It forms in layers, giving the banded patterns. The best-known source is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with other parts of Africa. It is soft, about 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, so it is most often cut as cabochons, beads and carvings.
Spotting reconstituted or plastic malachite
Imitations include plastic, printed glass and "reconstituted" malachite, which is crushed stone bound in resin. Natural malachite has irregular, flowing bands that never repeat exactly; imitations often show patterns that look printed, repeat, or are a little too perfect. Real malachite also feels cool and heavier than plastic. We inspect every stone, and a certificate of authenticity is available on request.
Belief and tradition
Malachite is traditionally regarded as a protective, grounding stone, believed to absorb negativity and support confidence and change. Some South Asian astrological traditions link it with Venus (Shukra) and emotional balance. These are beliefs rather than guaranteed effects.
Caring for a soft stone
Because malachite is soft and sensitive, look after it a little more than harder gems:
- Keep it away from acids, household cleaners, perfume and heat.
- Take a malachite ring off for washing, cooking and exercise.
- Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away.
- Store it separately so harder stones do not scratch it.
