Checking a stone yourself in Sukkur

The jewellers around Sukkur's older bazaars and in Rohri sell a wide range of ring stones, and quality varies from very good to coloured glass. A few habits protect you wherever you buy:

1. Look in daylight, away from the counter lamps. Strong bulbs make glass and dyed stones glow. Sukkur's bright sun is your friend here: step outside and look again.
2. Ask what treatment the stone has had. Heated neelam and pukhraj are normal when disclosed. Dyed aqeeq and glass-filled yaqoot sold as natural are not.
3. Weigh it in carats or the standard ratti. The gemstone ratti used in Pakistan is 0.91 carat; the jeweller's sunari ratti is smaller, about 0.61 carat. Ask which one is meant, and use our carat to ratti converter to compare quotes.
4. Be wary of a large, clean, bright stone at a small price. Natural material rarely works that way.

Wearing a stone in the Sukkur heat

Summers in upper Sindh are among the hottest in Pakistan, and that affects how a ring stone wears. Sweat and soap build up behind a closed setting and dull the stone, so clean the back of the ring with warm water and a soft brush every few weeks.
