What kunzite is
Kunzite is the pink-to-violet variety of the mineral spodumene. Yellow to greenish-yellow spodumene is also cut as a gem and sometimes appears alongside it. Spodumene grows as large, clear crystals, which is why kunzite is often available in bigger sizes and good clarity. Besides Afghanistan and Pakistan, Brazil is a well-known source.
Good to know before you buy
It changes with the angle
Kunzite is strongly pleochroic: it looks more intense pink viewed along the length of the crystal and paler from the sides. A skilled cutter orients the stone so the best colour shows through the top. When comparing listings, pay attention to how even and strong the colour appears face-up.
It is sensitive to light and knocks
Kunzite's colour can fade with long exposure to strong sunlight, which is why it is sometimes called an "evening stone". It also has perfect cleavage, so a sharp knock can split it even though it rates 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. It is lovely in pendants and earrings, and in rings that are worn with care.
How kunzite is valued
The deepest, most saturated pink to violet colours are the most valued; very pale stones are more affordable. Kunzite is expected to be clean, so visible inclusions reduce price. A well-oriented, lively cut matters a lot for this stone, and large clean pieces carry a higher per-carat rate. Some kunzite is treated to deepen colour; where known, we disclose it. Each listing's per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.
Is it genuine?
Natural kunzite feels cool and shows a clear change in colour intensity as you turn it. Pink glass looks the same from every angle and may contain round bubbles. Other pink gems, such as pink topaz or tourmaline, can look similar, so a certificate of authenticity is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged.
Kunzite and belief
Kunzite is a relatively modern gem, named in the early twentieth century, so it has no ancient astrological role. In modern crystal lore it is regarded as a "stone of the heart", believed to encourage love, calm and emotional healing. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects.
Caring for your kunzite
Store kunzite away from sunlight, clean it with lukewarm soapy water only, and never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
