Natural Hematite Stone in Pakistan
Hematite, hadeed in Urdu, is natural iron ore polished to a mirror-like silver-grey, and it is the only truly metallic-looking stone in our range. It is also surprisingly heavy, which is the first clue to telling it from the many cheap imitations sold under its name.

A Stone Made of Iron
Hematite is iron oxide. Uncut, it can look dull and rusty; polished, it takes a bright, reflective lustre unlike any other gemstone. Its density is the giveaway: a hematite cabochon weighs roughly twice as much as an agate of the same size, so it feels noticeably heavy when you pick it up.
How to Spot Real Hadeed
The streak test
Despite its grey surface, hematite leaves a red-brown streak when rubbed on unglazed ceramic, such as the back of a tile. The name itself comes from the Greek word for blood. This is the test gemologists rely on.
The magnet test
Many inexpensive "magnetic hematite" beads are actually a man-made ferrite material with no connection to the mineral. Natural hematite is, at most, only weakly attracted to a magnet. A stone that snaps hard onto a magnet is very unlikely to be natural.
Weight and feel
Real hematite is heavy and cool to the touch. Light, warm-feeling pieces are often plastic or coated glass.
Hadeed Chini, Hadeed Sini and Other Names
Several trade names circulate in Pakistan for hematite and hematite-like material, and they are not always used consistently. What matters is simple: is the stone natural iron oxide, or a pressed synthetic? We list natural hematite and say so. Where a material is manufactured, we don't call it hadeed.
Durability: Tougher Looking Than It Is
At 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, hematite is softer than agate and more brittle than its metallic look suggests. A sharp knock against a hard edge can chip it, so a protective bezel suits it better than prongs, and it is best taken off before heavy work. Its whole appeal is the polish, so keep it away from abrasives and wipe it dry after handling, because iron and standing water don't mix.
Traditional Associations
Hematite has long been associated with grounding and strength in various folk traditions, partly because of its weight and its link with iron. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects, and many buyers choose it simply for its striking, modern look in a silver ring.
