Patterns and colours

Jasper comes in more looks than almost any other stone. The ones buyers ask about most:

• Red jasper - the classic, an even brick to blood red and the most popular for rings.
• Picture and landscape jasper - browns and tans that form natural scenes resembling hills, deserts or skies.
• Green and multi-coloured jasper - mixed tones and swirls that suit bold, statement pieces.

Is jasper the same as Aqeeq?

They are close relatives. Jasper is an opaque form of microcrystalline quartz (it is often grouped with chalcedony), while Aqeeq is the translucent form. Hold a stone to a strong light: Aqeeq lets light through, jasper does not. Both rate about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and wear well.

What makes one Yashab worth more

For solid red jasper, an even, rich colour without grey patches is preferred. For patterned jasper, the appeal of the pattern is everything: a clear, balanced "picture" commands more than a muddy or random one. A smooth, glossy polish with no pits or cracks, a well-shaped cabochon and larger size all raise the price. Each listing is priced on its own; the per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.

Imitations to watch for

Jasper is inexpensive, so imitations are less common than with costly gems, but you will still find dyed stone, reconstituted chips set in resin, and printed glass or plastic. Warning signs include repeated or "too perfect" patterns, colour that looks painted on, and a light, warm feel. Natural jasper has irregular, flowing patterns and feels cool and solid. Yashab in tradition

Yashab appears in older Islamic and Persian writings on stones, and jasper has long been called a "supreme nurturer", traditionally worn for stability, grounding and protection. In some South Asian astrological traditions red jasper is linked with Mars (Mangal) and worn for endurance. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects.

Wash jasper with mild soap and water and dry it well. Avoid harsh chemicals that can dull the polish.
