Islamabad sits closer to Pakistan's gem-bearing mountains than any other major city. Peridot from Kohistan, aquamarine and tourmaline from Gilgit-Baltistan, emerald from Swat and topaz from Katlang near Mardan all travel south through the region on their way to market. So it is no surprise that capital buyers often ask for Pakistani stones by name. The capital's astrological favourites

As across Pakistan, many twin-city buyers follow a recommendation from an astrologer: neelam for Saturn, pukhraj for Jupiter, yaqoot for the Sun, zamurd for Mercury. Buying safely in the twin cities

The local gem trade is active and varied. Three rules hold anywhere:

1. Daylight, loupe, per-carat rate. Look at the stone by a window with a 10x loupe, then divide the price by the carat weight to get the per-carat rate.
2. Treatment in writing. Heated sapphire and lightly oiled emerald are normal; glass-filled ruby and dyed turquoise are not, at natural-stone prices.
3. A report for a big purchase. For a valuable stone, ask for an independent laboratory report stating species, natural origin and treatment.
