Natural gemstones for Gilgit, Hunza and Nagar, sent from Lahore by insured courier with Cash on Delivery.
Gilgit is the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan, set where the Gilgit and Hunza rivers meet below some of the highest mountains on earth. The Karakoram Highway runs through the region, linking it with the rest of Pakistan to the south and continuing north through Hunza. It is also one of the most important gem regions in the country. The Hunza valley is known for ruby in marble and for spinel, and the pegmatites of Gilgit-Baltistan produce aquamarine, topaz, tourmaline and garnet that are admired worldwide. Our Gilgit-Baltistan gemstones page tells that story in more detail. GemStore is an online store based in Lahore; we have no shop in Gilgit, but we deliver natural stones there with Cash on Delivery.
Local gem heritage
Many families in Gilgit and Hunza know stones far better than buyers in the plains, because rough has been dug, traded and carried down the valleys for generations. Hunza ruby is typically pinkish red, often slightly cloudy or included, and set in white marble; clean, deep red pieces are scarce. Aquamarine and topaz come mostly from the high pegmatite areas, including Shigar near Skardu. When you buy a cut stone, though, the source matters less than honest description: what it is, whether it is treated, and what it weighs.
Stones Gilgit buyers ask for
- Ruby: local pride makes yaqoot a popular choice, both Hunza material and stones from other sources.
- Aquamarine (beruj): light blue, durable and a favourite gift.
- Topaz and tourmaline: colourful pegmatite stones that suit rings and pendants.
- Peridot: from Kohistan, further down the highway.
- Aqeeq and feroza: everyday ring stones, often chosen for tradition.
Any belief linked with a stone is a tradition rather than a promise, and for religious questions please ask a scholar you trust.
How to check a stone in Gilgit
Gilgit's bazaar has stone shops selling rough, specimens and cut stones, and visitors buy there every summer. The quality is real but so are the tricks:
- Rough is not a finished stone. A crystal can look fine and still yield only a small clean gem. Ask what it would cut to.
- Watch for heated or irradiated colour. Strong blue topaz is almost always treated. That is fine when disclosed.
- Check ruby for glass filling. Look for flattened bubbles or a glassy flash in fractures under a torch. See how to identify original ruby.
- Confirm the weight unit. The gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat; the sunari ratti is about 0.61 carat. Our carat to ratti converter helps.
Delivery to Gilgit and nearby areas
We dispatch from Lahore within 1 to 2 working days, and the insured, tracked courier normally delivers within about 7 working days. We cover Gilgit city, Jutial, Danyore and Konodas, and onward to Hunza (Aliabad and Karimabad), Nagar, Jaglot and Ghizer where couriers reach. Landslides or snow on the Karakoram Highway can delay deliveries by a few days, and we will keep you informed if that happens. Charges are set out in our shipping policy, and the delivery page explains packing and tracking.
Cash on Delivery and inspection
You can pay in cash when the parcel arrives. Open it in front of the rider, compare the stone with its listing photographs, and pay only if it is right. Each GemStore listing is one stone, photographed and priced on its own. If you want advice, send your budget on WhatsApp.
Certificates and returns
All stones are natural, with known treatments disclosed. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged; see the authenticity page. Unused stones may be returned within 7 days of delivery under the return policy.
Wearing a stone in a cold climate
Gilgit winters are cold and dry, and sudden changes of temperature can stress some stones. Avoid moving an opal or an emerald straight from a freezing street to a hot stove, and take rings off before heavy outdoor work. Hard stones such as ruby, sapphire, topaz and aquamarine cope well with daily wear. The topaz care guide explains why even hard stones can chip along a cleavage plane.
