Natural Blue Topaz Stone in Pakistan
Blue topaz gives you a bright, clean blue at a far gentler price than aquamarine or sapphire, and it is hard enough for a ring you wear every day. In the bazaar it is sometimes loosely called neela pukhraj, though pukhraj properly refers to yellow sapphire. Here is what to know before you choose one of the stones below.

The Honest Part First: How Blue Topaz Gets Its Colour
Nearly all blue topaz sold anywhere in the world begins as colourless or very pale topaz and is turned blue by irradiation followed by heating. The result is stable and permanent, and it is a standard, accepted treatment across the gem trade. Naturally blue topaz of strong colour is very rare, so if a seller tells you their vivid blue topaz is untreated, treat that claim with caution. We disclose treatment on every listing where it is known.
Sky, Swiss or London Blue?
| Tone | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Sky blue | The palest shade, light and airy, closest in look to aquamarine. |
| Swiss blue | A vivid, slightly electric mid-blue - the shade most people picture. |
| London blue | The deepest tone, an inky blue with a hint of grey or green. |
None of the three is "better"; they are different looks rather than different grades. Within any tone, judge the stone on clarity (blue topaz is usually eye-clean), the evenness of colour and the quality of the cut.
Don't Confuse It with Aquamarine
The two are mixed up all the time and priced very differently. Aquamarine is a beryl, rarer and usually paler and softer in tone, and it costs considerably more per carat. Blue topaz is denser and generally more saturated. If a large "aquamarine" is offered at a surprisingly generous price, ask whether it is actually topaz.
Durability and Care
Topaz rates 8 on the Mohs scale, harder than almost anything it meets in daily life, which makes it a strong choice for a ring. Its one weakness is perfect cleavage in one direction: a hard knock at the wrong angle can split it cleanly. Choose a protective setting, take the ring off for heavy work, and clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush rather than an ultrasonic cleaner.
