White topaz has a lower refractive index than diamond, so it reads as crisp and bright rather than dazzling. It holds its polish for years but is not indestructible.
Choosing a Stone When There Is No Colour
With no colour to judge, everything depends on clarity and cut:
- Clarity: choose a stone free of inclusions visible to the eye.
- Cut: facets should be even and meet cleanly. A badly proportioned white topaz looks glassy and lifeless, however clean it is.
- Size: larger stones are readily available and not disproportionately expensive, which is part of the appeal.
Natural or Imitation?
Glass imitations scratch more easily and often show rounded facet edges or tiny bubbles. Cubic zirconia is heavier and has more fire than topaz. A white topaz should feel cool, show sharp facet junctions under a loupe and resist scratching from most everyday materials. In the bazaar colourless topaz is sometimes loosely called safed pukhraj, though pukhraj properly refers to yellow sapphire, so always ask what mineral you are being sold. Tradition
As a substitute for diamond, white topaz is traditionally associated with Venus (Shukra) in Vedic astrology. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects; if you are buying for astrological reasons, consult an experienced astrologer about the weight and setting.

Topaz has perfect cleavage in one direction, so avoid sharp knocks and ultrasonic cleaners. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are all it needs. In a protective setting, a white topaz will look just as good in ten years as it does today.
