About Neelam
Sapphire is aluminium oxide coloured blue by traces of iron and titanium. It shares its mineral with ruby; sapphire in other colours is sold as fancy sapphire, such as yellow sapphire (Pukhraj) and purple sapphire. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is one of the most durable gems you can wear.
Kashmir, Ceylon, Burma, Madagascar: what origin tells you
| Origin | Typical character |
|---|---|
| Kashmir | Legendary soft, velvety cornflower blue; historic and extremely rare on today's market |
| Ceylon (Sri Lanka) | Bright, lively, often lighter blue with excellent brilliance |
| Burma (Myanmar) | Rich, deep royal blue |
| Madagascar and Africa | Wide range of good blues, often at fairer rates |
Origin influences price, but a fine stone from any source can outshine a poor one from a famous mine. When we know a stone's origin, the listing says so.
How to compare two Neelam stones
Start with colour: a vivid, medium to medium-dark blue that stays blue indoors is the most prized. Inky, very dark stones and greyish or greenish blues cost less. Then look at clarity, where fine silk is normal but visible cracks are not; cut, where a centred, even face without a dull window is best; and treatment, because unheated sapphire commands a premium over heated. Finally, larger fine stones are much rarer, so the per-carat rate climbs with size. Each listing's per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.
Treatments and imitations
Heating is the most common treatment and is stable and widely accepted. Other treatments, such as diffusion, and outright substitutes like glass, synthetic sapphire and blue spinel, also appear in markets. Signs of trouble include round gas bubbles, curved growth lines under a loupe, or colour concentrated only near the surface. Natural sapphire feels cool and hard and often shows fine silk. For a stone of this importance, a certificate of authenticity is available on request, and we can arrange independent lab testing.
Neelam in Vedic astrology
In Vedic astrology Neelam is the stone of Saturn (Shani) and is regarded as one of the most powerful gems. It is traditionally worn for discipline, focus and steady progress, and custom holds that it should only be worn after an astrologer's advice, sometimes on a trial basis first. Sapphire is also the September birthstone. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects.
Caring for your sapphire
Clean Neelam with warm soapy water and a soft brush. It is very hard but can still chip from a sharp blow.
