What Kala Aqeeq Actually Is
Agate is a banded form of chalcedony, a quartz made of crystals far too small to see, which filled gas pockets in volcanic rock layer by layer. Black agate is the darkest member of that family. A genuine stone is rarely a flat, lifeless black: hold it up to a strong torch and the thinnest edge lets through a little light, often with a faint shadow of banding. Stone that stays completely dead and opaque even at the edge is usually dyed grey agate or glass.
Origins and Why They Matter
- Yemen - the historic source of the most prized black aqeeq, valued in the Pakistani market for its dense, even colour. Yemeni stones still carry a premium.
- India and Brazil - where most of the black agate sold today is mined. Good stones come from both.
Origin moves the price far more than it changes how a stone looks. Where we know the source of a stone we say so; where we don't, we won't guess at a flattering one.
Five Checks Before You Buy
- Edge light: shine a torch through the thinnest edge. Natural agate glows faintly; dyed glass and resin do not behave the same way.
- Hardness: at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, agate is harder than a steel blade and will not take a scratch the way dyed marble or plastic does.
- Temperature: real agate feels cool in the hand and stays cool for a few seconds.
- Dye pooling: on dyed stones, colour gathers in surface pits, cracks and around drill holes.
- Disclosure: ask what treatment the stone has had. We state it on every listing where it is known.
Wearing a Black Aqeeq Ring
Kala aqeeq is the classic men's ring stone in Pakistan, usually cut as an oval or rectangular cabochon and set in silver. It is hard enough for everyday wear and sits well in a bezel. In Islamic tradition the aqeeq ring has long been associated with protection and steadiness, which is a large part of why it is so widely worn. These are traditional beliefs, not promised results, and we make no claims about them. A wipe with lukewarm water and a soft cloth is all the care it needs.
