Natural Moss Agate (Shajri Aqeeq) in Pakistan

What the name means

"Shajar" means tree, and that is exactly what buyers see inside a good stone: branching, fern-like shapes called dendrites. They are mineral growths, mostly of manganese or iron oxides, trapped inside clear or milky chalcedony. Despite the name, moss agate does not usually show the banding of other agates; it is the patterns that make it special. Like all Aqeeq, it rates about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and is very durable.

Judging a Shajri Aqeeq

Price and appeal come down to what is inside the stone:

• Clarity of the pattern - sharp, well-defined "trees" or moss against a clean, translucent background.
• Composition - a balanced scene that fills the face attractively, rather than a random cluster at one edge.
• Colour - green moss is classic; striking black dendrites in clear stone are also popular.
• Finish and size - a high polish, no cracks and a larger stone all raise the value.

Each stone is priced on its own, and the per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.

Real patterns or painted?

Because every natural dendrite pattern is unique, imitations give themselves away. Look for these signs of a fake:

• Patterns that sit on the surface rather than inside the stone.
• Identical or repeating designs across several stones.
• Glass that warms quickly in the hand or shows round bubbles.
