Known in Urdu as Zamurd
Natural Emerald (Zamurd) Stone in Pakistan
Emerald, called Zamurd in Urdu and panna in Hindi, is the green variety of beryl and one of the most valued gemstones in the world, with some of its fine material mined right here in Pakistan's Swat valley. Each emerald in this collection is a single stone, photographed as it is and priced individually, with oiling or other treatment disclosed when known.

Before you buy: four things that set an emerald's value
- Colour - the single biggest factor. A vivid, slightly bluish-green to pure green, neither too dark nor too pale, earns the highest rate.
- Clarity - almost every natural emerald has inclusions, which the trade calls the "jardin" (garden). Buyers accept them, but fewer and less visible inclusions raise the price.
- Treatment - most emeralds are oiled or resin-filled to reduce the look of fine fissures. Minor oiling is standard; heavy filling lowers value.
- Origin and size - well-known sources carry a premium, and the per-carat rate climbs steeply for larger, cleaner stones.
Every listing shows the price for that one stone; its per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.
Swat, Colombia, Zambia and Brazil
Swat emerald from Pakistan is admired for its bright, lively green and is usually found in smaller sizes. Colombian emerald is world-famous for its pure, warm green and sits at the top of the market. Zambian emerald often has a slightly bluish, deeper green and good clarity, while Brazilian emerald tends to be lighter and more affordable. Where we know a stone's origin, the listing says so.
Spotting a natural Zamurd
Green glass, synthetic (lab-grown) emerald and "doublets" (two pieces glued together) are all sold as emerald. Warning signs include a perfectly clean stone at a low price, round gas bubbles, or a visible join line when you look at the stone from the side. Natural emerald usually shows a soft inner garden of inclusions and a velvety colour. A certificate of authenticity is available on request, and we can arrange independent lab testing for a high-value purchase. More on this on our authenticity page.
About the gem
Emerald is beryl coloured green by chromium and vanadium, the same species as aquamarine. It rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, but because of its natural fissures it is more brittle than its hardness suggests.
Zamurd in tradition
Emerald is the May birthstone. In Vedic astrology panna is the stone of Mercury (Budh), traditionally worn for intellect, memory and clear communication, and it is popular among students and people in business. These are beliefs, not guaranteed results; please consult an astrologer about weight and finger if that is your purpose.
Caring for emerald
Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, hot water and harsh chemicals, which can remove oil and open fissures. Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth and protect the stone from hard knocks.
