Gemstones in Peshawar

Peshawar has long been one of the great gem-trading cities of the region. Namak Mandi is famous well beyond Pakistan as a market for rough and cut stones, where Swat emerald, Kohistan peridot, northern aquamarine and tourmaline, and stones from Afghanistan change hands. Peshawar buyers know their stones. They also know that glass, synthetics and heavily treated material move through the same channels. Wholesale market or retail stone?

A wholesale market is a fine place for a dealer who can grade parcels by eye. For someone buying one stone for a ring, it is harder going:

• Grading is up to you. Colour, clarity and cut have to be judged on the spot, often under poor light.
• Paperwork is rare. Cut stones are seldom sold with a written treatment statement or lab report.
• Treated and synthetic material sits beside the real thing. Heated, glass-filled and lab-grown corundum can all look convincing to an untrained eye.

Pakistan's own stones

Peshawar customers take particular pride in local material, and for good reason:

• Swat emerald (zamurd): intensely coloured, usually small.
• Kohistan peridot (zabarjad): bright green, often in larger clean sizes.
• Aquamarine (beruj) from the Shigar valley and Gilgit-Baltistan.
• Tourmaline in greens and pinks from the northern mountains.
• Katlang topaz from near Mardan, known for pink and sherry tones.

Where a stone in our collection is Pakistani, the listing says so. Where it is from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mozambique or elsewhere, it says that instead, and only where the origin can be supported.

Checking any stone you buy in Peshawar

1. Daylight first. Shop lighting flatters everything.
2. Treatment and origin in writing. "Kashmir neelam" or "Burma yaqoot" without a laboratory report is a sales pitch, not a fact.
3. Per-carat comparison. A clean, vivid stone far below the usual rate is very unlikely to be natural.
4. Lab confirmation for valuable stones. An independent report states the species, whether it is natural, and any treatment.

Delivery to Peshawar and beyond

Orders leave Lahore within 1-2 working days and are delivered by insured, tracked courier within about 7 working days to Hayatabad, University Town, Cantt or anywhere else in Peshawar, and to nearby cities such as Mardan, Nowshera, Swat, Abbottabad and Kohat. Shipping is a flat Rs. 500 per order.
