Natural Nephrite Stone in Pakistan
Nephrite, often called sang-e-yashab, is the "other" jade, and historically the more important one: most of the jade carved in China over thousands of years was nephrite. Its colours are calm - spinach green, olive, cream and grey - and it costs a fraction of fine jadeite, which makes it a sensible choice for a broad ring or a larger piece.

The Toughest Gem in Common Use
Nephrite is an amphibole mineral, 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, made of tightly interwoven fibres. That structure gives it exceptional toughness: it resists breaking better than almost any other natural stone, which is why people shaped it into tools and blades long before it became jewellery. For a ring worn every day, that toughness counts for more than raw hardness.
How Nephrite Compares with Jadeite
| Nephrite | Jadeite | |
|---|---|---|
| Mineral group | Amphibole | Pyroxene |
| Mohs hardness | 6 - 6.5 | 6.5 - 7 |
| Typical colours | Spinach, olive, cream, grey | Can reach vivid, intense greens |
| Toughness | Exceptional | Very high |
| Relative cost | More affordable | Top grades are very expensive |
Both are correctly called jade. If you want vivid colour, explore our jade collection; if you want toughness and a gentle, classic look at a lower price, nephrite is the natural choice.
What Makes Good Nephrite
With nephrite, evenness and texture matter more than intensity. Look for:
- Even colour without blotchy patches.
- A fine, smooth texture that polishes to a soft, almost oily lustre rather than a glassy shine.
- No cracks, and no chalky areas where the stone has weathered.
Substitutes to Watch For
Serpentine, sometimes sold as "new jade", is much softer at 2.5 to 4 and scratches easily. Dyed quartzite can look convincing until you notice colour pooled in its cracks. Genuine nephrite is dense, feels cool, and gives a clear ringing note when two pieces are tapped together. We state on each listing whether a stone is nephrite or jadeite, and disclose any treatment we know of.
Caring for your nephrite
Nephrite needs little fuss. Clean it with lukewarm water and a soft cloth, keep it away from perfume and harsh chemicals, and store it apart from harder stones. In Chinese tradition jade, including nephrite, is linked with harmony and long life; we share this as cultural belief rather than a promised benefit.
