Natural Yellow Topaz Stone in Pakistan

Yellow topaz is a hard, bright gem in golden, honey and sherry shades, with the orange-pink "imperial" tones the most prized. It is often called Sunehla in the local trade. Yellow Topaz stones

Golden and imperial topaz

Topaz forms in a wide range of colours. Yellow to golden-brown stones are the most common natural colours after colourless. "Imperial topaz" is a trade term for the finest orange-yellow to orange-pink stones, with Brazil's Ouro Preto area the classic source. Pakistan is known for pink topaz from Katlang, near Mardan, which you can read about on our main topaz page.

Yellow topaz, citrine or Pukhraj?

Three yellow stones are regularly mixed up in Pakistani markets, sometimes on purpose.

StoneMineralHardnessWhat to know
Yellow topazTopaz8Bright and hard, with a slippery feel and high lustre
Citrine (Sunehla)Quartz7Much more common; most golden-orange citrine is heated amethyst
PukhrajCorundum (yellow sapphire)9The stone of Jupiter in Vedic astrology, rarer and usually costlier

If a seller offers "Pukhraj" at the price of topaz or citrine, ask for the mineral name in writing. Compare all three in our citrine and yellow sapphire collections, and read what makes one Pukhraj cost more than another.

How to choose yellow topaz

  • Colour: a rich golden to orange tone is valued above pale straw yellow. Pinkish-orange imperial shades rank highest.
  • Clarity: yellow topaz is usually clean to the eye; visible inclusions should lower the price.
  • Cut: good facets give strong sparkle. Topaz crystals are long, so oval and pear shapes are common.
  • Treatment: some topaz is heated or coated to change its colour. Any treatment we know of is disclosed on the listing.

Wearing and care

Topaz rates 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage and can split from one hard knock. Choose a protective setting for a ring and avoid steam and sudden heat. See our topaz care guide. Topaz is a November birthstone.
