Why buyers choose bloodstone
Bloodstone has a quiet, masculine look that works especially well in men's signet-style rings and cabochon pendants. Its deep green body and red flecks are completely natural, and no two stones are alike. It is also hard and tough enough for daily wear, at about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
What bloodstone actually is
Gemmologically, bloodstone (also called heliotrope) is an opaque variety of chalcedony, the microcrystalline quartz family that also includes Aqeeq and jasper. Its green comes from mineral inclusions, and the red spots are iron oxide. India is the best-known source of good material.
Reading the pattern: how quality is judged
- Base colour - a rich, dark green with no grey patches is preferred.
- The red spots - vivid red flecks, spread fairly evenly across the face, are the most prized. Stones with few or brownish spots are cheaper.
- Polish and shape - a smooth, glassy polish and a well-shaped cabochon or flat top show the stone at its best.
- Size and soundness - larger stones without cracks cost more.
The price shown on each listing is for that one stone; its per-carat rate is simply price divided by carat weight.
Natural bloodstone or imitation?
Imitations are usually dyed stone or glass with painted-looking or very regular red marks. Natural spots are irregular in shape and size and sit within the stone rather than on top of it. Real bloodstone takes a fine polish and feels cool. We inspect every stone, and a certificate of authenticity is available on request.
Bloodstone in tradition
Bloodstone has a long history as a "warrior's stone". In South Asian astrological practice it is associated with Mars (Mangal), and it is traditionally worn for courage, stamina and protection. These are beliefs handed down over generations, not guaranteed outcomes; if astrology is your reason for buying, consult an astrologer you trust.
Care tips
Clean with mild soap and warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and store it apart from harder stones.
