Tanzanite stones
One source, one remarkable colour
Tanzanite is the blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Because it comes from a single mining area, supply is limited, which is a large part of its appeal to collectors. It is also strongly trichroic: turn a stone and you can see blue, violet and, in some directions, a burgundy or bronze tone. A cutter decides which colour faces up, which is why some stones look bluer and others more violet.
Heating is normal for tanzanite
Most rough tanzanite comes out of the ground brownish or greenish-blue. Gentle heating removes the brown and reveals the blue-violet colour buyers know. This is standard, stable and expected for almost all tanzanite on the market. Other treatments, such as coatings, are not acceptable unless declared. We disclose known treatments on every listing.
Grading tanzanite
- Colour saturation - the deepest, most vivid blue to violet-blue is the most valued; pale lavender stones are much more affordable.
- Blue versus violet - many buyers prefer a bluer face, though rich violet is also popular.
- Clarity - tanzanite is usually eye-clean; visible inclusions reduce its rate.
- Cut and size - a well-proportioned cut shows the best colour, and saturated colour tends to be stronger in larger stones, so size has a big effect on price.
Each listing's per-carat rate is its price divided by carat weight.
Is it real tanzanite?
Natural tanzanite shows its colour shift when you tilt it and feels cool. Common substitutes include glass, synthetic forsterite and blue-violet synthetic corundum, which may look a single flat colour from every angle or show bubbles. Coated stones can show scratched or uneven colour on facet edges. A certificate of authenticity is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged.
Belief and modern lore
Tanzanite is a modern gem with no classical astrological tradition. In modern crystal lore it is associated with calm, insight and clear thinking, and it is one of the December birthstones. Some buyers wear it as a blue alternative to Neelam, though astrologers treat them differently. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects.
Caring for tanzanite
At about 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, with a cleavage direction, tanzanite needs some care. Avoid knocks, sudden temperature changes and ultrasonic or steam cleaners; warm soapy water and a soft brush are all it needs. It is best in pendants, earrings and rings that are worn carefully.
