Which moonstone is right for you?
Blue-sheen moonstone
The most prized type: a nearly transparent body with a vivid blue glow that moves as you turn the stone. Sri Lanka is the classic source.
White and peach moonstone
A milky white, cream or peach body with a softer silvery sheen. Gentle, versatile and often more affordable, these suit everyday jewellery.
Rainbow moonstone
A clear to white stone that flashes blue and sometimes other colours. Gemmologically it is a variety of labradorite, but the trade name "rainbow moonstone" is widely used.
What sets the value
The quality of the sheen matters most: a strong, centred glow that covers much of the stone, especially in blue, ranks highest. Next comes transparency, since a clear body lets the glow appear to float. Look for few visible inclusions or cracks, and a well-shaped, symmetrical cabochon. Size adds to price, especially in fine blue stones. Each listing's per-carat rate equals price divided by carat weight.
About the gem
Moonstone is made of thin, alternating layers of two feldspar minerals. Light scattering between those layers creates the glow. It rates about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and has cleavage, so it can chip if knocked. Besides Sri Lanka, India is an important source.
Moonstone or opalite glass?
The most common imitation is opalite, a man-made glass that shows a bluish glow from every angle and often looks too perfect. Natural moonstone's sheen moves and appears in one area as you tilt it, and the stone usually has small natural inclusions such as tiny "centipede" cracks. A certificate of authenticity is available on request.
Traditional associations
Moonstone is a June birthstone. In South Asian astrology it is linked with the Moon (Chandra) and traditionally worn for calm, intuition and emotional balance, sometimes as an alternative to pearl. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects; if astrology guides your choice, speak to an astrologer about the right weight and finger.
Caring for your moonstone
Clean moonstone with lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and sudden temperature changes, and protect it from hard knocks.
