Feroza is the Urdu and Persian name for turquoise, the opaque sky-blue to greenish-blue stone that has been set in silver rings across Iran, Afghanistan and South Asia for over a thousand years. Every Feroza listed here is a single natural stone, photographed as it is and priced individually, with stabilisation stated whenever it applies.

Feroza stones
Nishapuri, Shajri and Afghani Feroza
Pakistani buyers usually ask for Feroza by style:
- Irani Nishapuri Feroza - named after the historic mines near Nishapur in Iran, and prized for a pure, even sky-blue with little or no matrix.
- Shajri Feroza - turquoise laced with natural brown or black veins (matrix), which many people find just as attractive.
- Afghani Feroza - good colour at gentler rates, often with some matrix or a slightly greener tone.
Natural, stabilised or dyed: the question that matters most
Turquoise is a soft, porous phosphate mineral, about 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. Much of the material on the market is stabilised, meaning a clear resin has been worked into the pores so the stone is harder and keeps its colour. Stabilisation is common and acceptable when it is declared. What we do not sell is dyed stone or imitations: dyed howlite and magnesite, reconstituted turquoise powder, and plastic are all sold as "feroza" in markets. Each GemStore listing states whether a stone is natural or stabilised.
How to judge a Feroza
A strong, even blue is the most valued colour; greenish stones are usually cheaper. Look for a smooth, waxy polish and a surface without pits or cracks. In Shajri stones, a fine, attractive web of matrix adds to the price, while blotchy matrix lowers it. Untreated stones of good colour cost more than stabilised ones. The per-carat rate of each listing is price divided by carat weight.
Signs of a fake
Very bright, perfectly uniform "swimming pool" blue at a low price is a warning sign. In dyed howlite, the dye collects in cracks and veins, which then look darker than the rest of the stone. Plastic feels light and warm. A certificate of authenticity is available on request, and independent testing can be arranged.
Feroza in tradition
Turquoise is one of the December birthstones and has a long place in Persian and Islamic culture, where it is associated with protection and good fortune. In South Asian astrological practice it is often linked with Jupiter (Brihaspati) and traditionally worn for protection while travelling. Feroza in a silver ring remains one of the most popular choices for men. These are beliefs and customs, not guaranteed effects.
Caring for turquoise
Because it is porous, Feroza can absorb skin oils, perfume, soap and cosmetics, which may change its colour over time. Take your ring off for washing and cooking, wipe it with a soft dry cloth, and never use ultrasonic cleaners.
