Yemeni, Irani or Sulemani: the main kinds of Aqeeq
The word Aqeeq covers several looks, and buyers usually know which one they want before they start:
- Yemeni Aqeeq - the most sought-after, famous for a deep, glassy red to orange-red (carnelian) with a smooth, even glow when held to the light.
- Irani Aqeeq - known for attractive colours and natural banding, often slightly more affordable.
- Sulemani Aqeeq - black-and-white or brown-and-white banded agate, prized for a bold, striking pattern.
- Shajri Aqeeq - agate with tree-like natural patterns, which we list separately as moss agate.
The stone behind the name
Agate and carnelian are microcrystalline quartz, the same family as chalcedony. They rate about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so Aqeeq wears well in a ring for years. Origin names such as Yemeni and Irani are trade terms that describe a style and source; where we know a stone's origin, we say so on its listing.
How to judge value
For red Aqeeq, a rich, even colour and good translucency are the main drivers of price. For banded stones, buyers pay more for crisp, regular bands with strong contrast. A clean surface without cracks, a good polish and a pleasing shape add to the value, and larger stones naturally cost more. Each listing shows the price for that one stone, and the per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.
Spotting dyed or fake Aqeeq
Agate is porous, and much of the cheap "aqeeq" sold in markets is dyed in colours nature does not produce, such as bright blue, pink or flat jet black. Dyed colour often looks too uniform and may gather in cracks. Glass imitations can show bubbles and feel warmer. Natural Aqeeq usually shows some variation in tone and fine natural banding when held to a light. We inspect every stone, and a certificate of authenticity is available on request.
Aqeeq in Islamic tradition
Aqeeq holds a special place in Muslim culture. Many people wear it in a silver ring as a practice they associate with the Sunnah, and stones are often engraved with names or short prayers. It is traditionally linked with protection, calm and blessing. We present these as matters of faith and tradition rather than guaranteed effects, and the choice of stone is a personal one. Custom silver ring settings can be discussed with us on WhatsApp.
Caring for your aqeeq
Clean Aqeeq with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals, which can affect polish and any surface treatment.
