Hyderabad stands on the Indus and has been a centre of Sindhi culture for centuries, known for its bazaars, its glass bangles and its ajrak. It is also close to some of the best-loved Sufi shrines in Pakistan, including Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai's at Bhit Shah. In this region the ring stone has long been part of devotional life, and aqeeq in particular is widely worn. GemStore sends natural stones to Hyderabad by insured, tracked courier, and you pay only after you have seen the stone.
Shrine-stall stones: what to watch for
Stalls around shrines and in the old bazaars sell aqeeq, feroza and dur-e-najaf in every colour. Some are genuine; many are dyed chalcedony, reconstituted turquoise or glass. If you buy locally:
- Look at the stone in daylight outside the stall.
- Ask directly whether it is dyed or stabilised.
- Avoid stones whose colour seems concentrated in cracks or around a drill hole.
- For a larger stone, ask for the weight and a per-carat price.
Our gemstone buying guide lists more simple checks.
Devotional stones and their traditions
- Aqeeq: Yemeni, Sulemani and banded agates, worn as ring stones in Islamic custom. Natural aqeeq shows slightly uneven colour and soft banding; perfectly flat, bright colour is often dye.
- Dur-e-najaf: a clear quartz valued for its association with Najaf. It should look like rock crystal, not glass with round bubbles.
- Feroza: turquoise, traditionally worn for protection. Our listings state whether a feroza is natural or stabilised.
- Moti (pearl): traditionally linked with the Moon and with calm.
These are traditions and matters of faith, and we describe them that way. Our part is to make sure the stone itself is natural and honestly described.
Precious stones for astrology and weddings
Hyderabad customers also buy the precious stones used in astrological tradition and in wedding jewellery: neelam (blue sapphire), pukhraj (yellow sapphire), yaqoot (ruby) and zamurd (emerald). If you have an astrologer's recommendation, send it on WhatsApp with your budget and we will suggest natural stones from stock. The gemstones by rashi guide explains the traditional pairings, and the gemstone names page maps Urdu and local names to English. No stone can guarantee an outcome.
