Why some aquamarines cost far more than others
Aquamarine prices span a very wide range, and the reasons are easy to see once you know them. A deeper, more saturated blue is rarer than a pale one, so it carries a much higher rate. Clarity matters a great deal because buyers expect aquamarine to be clean; eye-visible inclusions bring the price down sharply. A well-proportioned cut adds brilliance, and large clean stones command a premium per carat. The per-carat rate of any listing is its price divided by its carat weight.
Pakistan's own aquamarine
The mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, including the Shigar and Skardu areas, are known worldwide for beautiful beryl crystals. Many Pakistani buyers like owning a gem from their own country, and when we know a stone's origin, the listing says so.
Is it genuine? Simple checks
- Natural aquamarine feels cool and stays cool longer than glass.
- Look through the side of the stone: aquamarine often shows a slightly different blue or near-colourless tone from different angles.
- Glass may show round bubbles and swirl marks; blue topaz is a common substitute and usually looks a more electric blue.
For full certainty, a certificate of authenticity is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged.
Beliefs and birthstone
Aquamarine is the birthstone for March. Older lore connects it with the sea and safe travel, and it is traditionally worn for calm, courage and clear speech. These are traditional associations rather than guaranteed effects. Its gentle colour suits rings, pendants and earrings, for men and women.
Caring for your aquamarine
Aquamarine is durable, but a hard knock can still chip an edge. Clean with warm soapy water and store it apart from harder gems such as sapphire.
