Jamunia care, from sunlight to storage

Keeping Amethyst Purple: Light, Heat and Everyday Care

In short: To keep amethyst (jamunia) purple, protect it from strong sunlight and heat, which can gradually lighten its colour. Avoid leaving it on a sunny windowsill or car dashboard, and ask a jeweller to remove the stone before soldering. Clean it with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush, avoid steam cleaners, and store each piece separately.

Amethyst (jamunia) is tough enough to wear every day, but its purple is more delicate than its hardness suggests. The colour comes from traces of iron and natural irradiation inside the quartz, and strong heat or long exposure to bright sun can gradually lighten it. Good care is mostly about protecting that colour, and only secondly about scratches.

The one thing that can fade it

Leaving an amethyst ring on a sunny windowsill or a car dashboard in a Pakistani summer is the classic mistake. Prolonged strong light and heat can wash out the colour over time, and a jeweller's torch held too close during repair can change it in seconds. Store it in a closed box, and when a ring needs resizing or soldering, ask the jeweller to remove the stone first.

How hard is it, really?

At 7 on the Mohs scale amethyst resists the household dust and grit that dull softer stones, so a daily ring is realistic. It is not indestructible: a hard knock on a sharp corner can chip it, which is why a bezel or a setting with protective prongs is sensible for a stone you wear while working.

Cleaning, step by step

  1. Soak the stone for a few minutes in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap.
  2. Brush gently behind the stone with a soft toothbrush, where lotion and dust collect.
  3. Rinse in clean water and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Avoid steam cleaners and very hot water, which can stress any inclusions. Ultrasonic cleaners are usually fine for clean, untreated amethyst, but skip them if the stone has visible fractures.

Storage that prevents scratches

Quartz scratches softer stones such as pearl, feroza or lapis, and is scratched in turn by sapphire, ruby and topaz. Keep each piece in its own pouch or compartment. A dark drawer also protects the colour.

Natural, heated or synthetic?

Lab-grown amethyst is common and cheap to make. It often looks too clean and evenly coloured, while natural stones usually show colour zoning, slightly darker and lighter bands that you can see when you tilt the stone over white paper. Dyed quartz is rarer but exists. We disclose treatments where they are known, and a certificate of authenticity is available on request.

What jamunia is traditionally worn for

In South Asian practice amethyst is linked to Saturn (Shani) and is worn for calm, clarity and restful sleep. These are traditional beliefs, not promised outcomes. If an astrologer has recommended it, agree the weight and metal beforehand; our rashi guide lists the usual pairings.

Choosing your stone

Deep, even purple without brown or grey tones commands the most; paler lilac stones cost less but can be very pretty in silver. Every stone in our amethyst collection is photographed individually. If you are still comparing, look at chalcedony or labradorite. Urdu and English names are on the gemstone names page, and we deliver by Cash on Delivery to Lahore, Karachi and the rest of Pakistan.

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Does amethyst fade in sunlight?

It can, gradually, with long exposure to strong sun and heat. Store it in a closed box and avoid leaving it in hot cars or on windowsills.

Can I put amethyst in an ultrasonic cleaner?

A clean, untreated stone usually survives it, but warm soapy water and a soft brush are safer, especially if the stone shows fractures.

Is amethyst hard enough for a daily ring?

Yes. At 7 on the Mohs scale it handles everyday wear, though a protective setting helps against chips from hard knocks.

How can I tell natural amethyst from synthetic?

Natural stones usually show uneven colour zoning, while synthetics tend to look too clean and uniform. A lab test is the only certain answer, and we can arrange one on request.
