Chalcedony is the umbrella name for microcrystalline quartz, the same family that includes agate, carnelian, onyx and bloodstone. When dealers say "chalcedony" on its own, they usually mean the smooth, softly translucent stones in lavender blue, milky white, grey or sea green, without strong banding. Because the material is plentiful, quality is decided by subtle things you can learn to see in a minute.
Translucency: the glow from within
Fine chalcedony looks lit from inside. Hold it up to a window: the light should pass through evenly and give a soft, glowing body. Opaque, chalky stones, or those with dull grey patches, sit lower in the range. This single quality probably moves the price more than anything else.
Evenness of colour
Unbanded chalcedony is valued for calm, uniform colour. A gentle, even lavender blue is the classic favourite. Faint cloudy streaks are normal; sharp bands, brown stains or blotches make it a different (often cheaper) material.
Lustre: waxy, not glassy
Natural chalcedony has a soft, slightly waxy shine rather than the hard mirror of glass. That is a quality point and an authenticity check in one. A stone that looks like a glass marble deserves a closer look.
Cut and finish
Most chalcedony is cut en cabochon. Look for a symmetrical dome, a smooth base and a polish without pits or haze. Thick, well-proportioned cabochons show the glow best.
The imitations
- Dyed agate: colour that is too bright or concentrated in cracks and along bands.
- Glass: round bubbles under a loupe and a glassy rather than waxy lustre.
- Dyed "blue chalcedony": very saturated blue that no natural chalcedony shows.
Ask the seller in writing whether the stone is natural and whether its colour is treated.
Is chalcedony tough enough for a ring?
At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale chalcedony is happy in a daily ring, though a sharp knock can chip the rim, so a bezel is a good choice. Clean it with mild soap and water; it is slightly porous, so avoid soaking it in perfume, oil or chemicals.
Chalcedony and the Moon
In South Asian practice chalcedony is linked to the Moon (Chandra) and worn for calm and measured speech. These are traditional beliefs, not promised results; see our rashi guide if an astrologer is advising you.
