Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral with unmistakable bands of light and dark green, often curling into circles and "eyes". It is one of the most recognisable stones there is, and that very look is what imitations copy. For a first-time buyer, the essentials are simple: learn to read the banding, understand that it is soft, and know how to look after it.
How to read the bands
Natural malachite grows in layers, so its pattern is a record of how it formed. Look for:
- bands that vary in width and tone, from pale mint to almost black-green;
- circles, swirls or ribbon patterns that are irregular rather than perfectly repeated;
- a fine, silky sheen on well-polished pieces.
The most attractive stones show crisp contrast between light and dark bands, and a pattern that is well placed on the finished shape.
Spotting imitations
Reconstituted malachite
Crushed malachite bonded with resin. Its banding is often too regular or slightly blurred, and it may look dull under a loupe with tiny specks of resin.
Plastic and glass
Printed or moulded patterns often repeat exactly. Plastic feels warm and light; glass may show bubbles.
Dyed stone
Less common, but colour that sits in cracks rather than in bands is a warning sign.
Natural malachite is fairly heavy for its size, which helps you separate it from plastic. Ask the seller in writing whether the stone is natural and solid.
It is soft, and that shapes how you use it
At 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale malachite scratches easily, even from household dust. It is best in pendants, earrings or occasional rings, and it should be stored on its own in a soft pouch.
Care rules
- Clean with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth only.
- Keep it away from acids, including lemon juice, vinegar and many household cleaners; malachite reacts with acid.
- Avoid heat, ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
- Put it on after perfume and cream.
A note on safety
Polished malachite is safe to wear. Its dust, however, contains copper and should not be inhaled, which is why cutters work it wet. Don't sand, drill or recut a malachite yourself.
Malachite and Shukra
In South Asian practice malachite is linked to Venus (Shukra) and worn for protection and emotional balance. These are traditional beliefs, not promised results; see our rashi guide.
