Garnet pricing, species by species

Why Garnets Differ in Price: Species, Colour and Size

In short: Garnet prices differ because garnet is a family of minerals, including almandine, pyrope, hessonite, spessartite and rhodolite, each valued differently, with rare green garnets in a separate bracket. Within a species, brightness of colour moves the rate most, followed by clarity, cut and size. Larger red garnets that stay bright rather than blackish earn more per carat.

"Garnet" is not one gem but a family of related minerals, and that is the first thing to understand about its price. A deep red almandine, an orange spessartite and a honey-brown hessonite are all garnets, yet they are mined in different places, look different and are valued differently. Before comparing per-carat rates, find out which garnet you are looking at.

The species you will meet in Pakistan

SpeciesTypical colourNotes for buyers
AlmandineDeep red to purplish redThe most common red garnet; can look dark in larger sizes.
PyropeBright to blood redOften livelier than almandine; many stones are a blend of the two.
HessoniteHoney, cinnamon to orange-brownSold as gomed in Vedic tradition; shows a distinctive swirly "heat wave" look inside.
SpessartiteOrange to reddish orangeBright orange stones are popular and can command more.
RhodoliteRaspberry to purplish pinkA pyrope-almandine blend prized for its lighter, brighter tone.

Rarer green garnets such as tsavorite and demantoid sit in a different price bracket altogether.

What moves the rate within a species

Brightness of colour

The biggest factor. Red garnets tend to go dark and blackish as they get bigger, so a stone that stays bright and lively in the face-up view is worth more per carat.

Clarity

Most red garnets are eye-clean, so visible inclusions bring the price down. Hessonite is an exception: its internal swirls are expected and are part of how it is identified.

Cut

A well-cut garnet lets light back out; a deep, poorly cut one looks like a dark bead. A good cut can matter more than an extra half carat.

Size

Per-carat rates rise for larger stones that keep good colour, but less steeply than for sapphire or ruby, because garnet is relatively abundant.

Treatments and imitations

Garnets are rarely treated, which is part of their appeal. They are sometimes confused with ruby or sold in its place; a useful clue is that ruby usually glows red under UV light while garnet stays dark. Red glass shows bubbles under magnification. If in doubt, independent lab testing can be arranged.

Everyday toughness

At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale garnet handles a daily ring well, though a sharp knock on an exposed edge can chip it.

Gomed, Rahu and belief

In South Asian practice garnet, especially hessonite (gomed), is linked to Rahu and worn for clarity of purpose and protection from confusion. These are traditional beliefs, not promised outcomes; see our rashi guide.

Check the per-carat rate

Each stone in our garnet collection is priced individually, so the per-carat rate is simply price divided by weight. Also compare labradorite or red coral. Urdu names are on our names page, and we deliver with Cash on Delivery to Lahore, Karachi and every other city.

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Is gomed a garnet?

Yes. Gomed is hessonite, the honey to orange-brown variety of grossular garnet.

Why are some garnets more expensive than others of the same size?

Species, brightness of colour, clarity and cut all affect the rate. A lively, well-cut stone is worth more than a dark one of the same weight.

Are garnets treated?

Rarely. Most garnets are sold untreated, which is part of their appeal.

Where can I see garnet prices?

Each listing shows the price and carat weight of that individual stone, so you can work out its per-carat rate.
