Organic gem, real checks

Marjan Explained: How to Buy Red Coral Without Regret

In short: To buy red coral (marjan) without regret, remember it is an organic material, the skeleton of tiny sea animals, so it is soft and heavily imitated. Look for strong, even red colour, a smooth surface and a fine natural grain, watch for dye in the pores, plastic or glass, and ask for "natural coral, undyed" on the invoice.

Red coral, known as marjan, is not a mineral at all. It is the skeleton of tiny sea animals, built from calcium carbonate, and that changes almost everything about how you buy it and look after it. It is soft, it reacts with acids, and it is heavily imitated. If this is your first coral, read this before you choose one.

Know what you are buying

Gem coral comes mainly from the Mediterranean and the seas around Japan and Taiwan. Its colour runs from orange-red to deep oxblood red, and it is usually cut as a smooth oval, round or, for astrological use, a triangle. Natural coral shows a fine, slightly wavy grain or tiny pits on its surface, a sign of its organic growth.

The common fakes and how to spot them

  • Dyed bamboo coral: a cheaper, paler coral dyed red. Under a loupe the colour sits in the surface pores and cracks, often darker there than elsewhere.
  • Plastic and resin: light, warm to the touch, and with a perfectly uniform colour and no natural grain.
  • Glass: may show round bubbles and a glassier lustre than the soft, waxy shine of real coral.

If a stone is flawless, intensely even in colour and cheap, be cautious. Ask for "natural coral, undyed" to be written on the invoice.

What makes good marjan

Strong, even red colour is the main value driver, followed by a smooth surface without visible pits or cracks, a good shape and a fine polish. Size matters too, as large clean pieces are scarcer.

Wearing and caring for coral

At 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale coral is soft. It is better in pendants and earrings than in a ring worn every day, though many people do wear coral rings for astrological reasons; if you do, remove it for work with your hands. Keep it away from perfume, lemon juice, vinegar and household cleaners, which can etch it. Clean with a damp cloth only, never in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Price

We price every piece separately based on colour, surface and size.

Marjan in tradition

In South Asian astrology red coral is linked with Mars (Mangal) and is traditionally worn for courage, stamina and decisiveness. These are beliefs, not guaranteed results. Agree weight, metal and finger with your astrologer before setting; our rashi guide shows common pairings.

Before you pay

Confirm it is natural coral rather than plastic, glass or dyed material, that any treatment is written down and that the weight is the finished piece's. We inspect every stone and photograph each one alone. Browse red coral, or compare topaz and blue topaz. Urdu and English names are on our names page, and Cash on Delivery reaches Lahore, Karachi and every other city.

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Is red coral a stone?

No. It is an organic gem made of calcium carbonate by tiny sea animals, which is why it is soft and sensitive to acids.

How can I tell dyed coral?

Under a loupe, dye collects in surface pores and cracks, looking darker there than on the rest of the surface.

Can I wear a coral ring daily?

Coral is soft at 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale. Many people wear it in rings for astrological reasons, but remove it for manual work and keep it away from chemicals.

What colour red coral is best?

A strong, even red is most valued, together with a smooth surface free of pits and cracks.

How should I clean red coral?

Wipe it with a soft damp cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, acids, perfume and household cleaners.
