Fifteen carats of chalcedony is a lot of stone for the money, and chalcedony as a family has a smooth, waxy lustre that takes a polish well. It is a natural chalcedony, and the price is Rs. 2,250, about Rs. 146 per carat.

Chalcedony is sometimes dyed, so colour deserves a question. Ask us on WhatsApp, quoting GS-00041, and we will tell you what we know about this exact stone. Independent lab testing is available on request. Ask for more photographs if you want to study its shape.

Hardness is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which is respectable. A pendant will last, and a ring is fine if the setting protects the stone from direct knocks. Chalcedony is traditionally linked with calm and goodwill, a matter of belief rather than any effect we can promise.

Wipe it with a soft damp cloth and keep it from harder gems. You can see comparable pieces in the chalcedony category and read our chalcedony quality guide.

On the Mohs scale chalcedony rates 6.5 to 7. That is middle-of-the-road hardness: comfortable in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care. Store it apart from harder stones so it does not pick up scratches, and wipe it with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing.

Whoever you buy chalcedony from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every chalcedony for those three points before it is listed, a certificate is available on request, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.
