Blue Gemstones نیلا
In short: Our natural blue gemstones are Neelam (blue sapphire), blue topaz, Beruj (aquamarine), tanzanite, Lajward (lapis lazuli) and Feroza (turquoise). The first four are transparent and faceted, while lapis and Feroza are opaque and usually cut as cabochons. Hardness, depth of blue and treatment separate them, and we disclose dyeing and stabilisation.

The blue stones and how they differ
| Stone | Hardness (Mohs) | Look | Typical treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neelam | 9 | Velvety mid to deep blue, often with fine silk | Heating is common |
| Blue topaz | 8 | Bright, even sky to London blue, very clean | Irradiated and heated |
| Beruj | 7.5–8 | Pale sea blue, glassy and clear | Often heated to remove green |
| Tanzanite | 6–7 | Violet-blue, shifts colour as you turn it | Almost always heated |
| Lajward | 5–5.5 | Opaque royal blue with gold pyrite flecks | Sometimes dyed or waxed |
| Feroza | 5–6 | Opaque sky blue to green-blue, may show matrix | Often stabilised |
What to check
- Neelam: even colour without dark patches; ask whether it is heated, especially if it is for astrology.
- Blue topaz: its colour comes from treatment, which is stable. It should never be sold as sapphire.
- Tanzanite: keep it away from knocks and ultrasonic cleaners.
- Lapis and Feroza: rub gently with a damp white cloth; dye may show. We disclose dyeing and stabilisation.

What drives value in blue stones
For Neelam, a pure, medium-deep blue that stays bright indoors is worth most, and unheated stones carry a premium. Blue topaz and aquamarine are valued for clean clarity and a stronger blue. With lapis, an even royal blue with little white calcite is best. Browse by budget in our mid-range filter or the others on the shop page.
