Purple Gemstones جامنی
In short: Our natural purple gemstones are Jamunia (amethyst), purple sapphire, tanzanite and kunzite, all transparent and usually faceted. Purple sapphire is the hardest, tanzanite has the richest violet-blue, amethyst offers the widest choice, and kunzite brings a soft pink-lilac. Turning the stone slowly helps, as tanzanite flashes blue one way and purple another.

The purple stones and how they differ
| Stone | Hardness (Mohs) | Look | Typical treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jamunia | 7 | Light lilac to deep grape purple | Usually untreated; sometimes heated |
| Purple sapphire | 9 | Violet to plum, bright sparkle | Heating common |
| Tanzanite | 6–7 | Violet-blue, changes colour as you turn it | Almost always heated |
| Kunzite | 6.5–7 | Pale pink to lilac, very clear | Sometimes irradiated |
How to tell them apart
Turn the stone slowly. Tanzanite flashes blue in one direction and purple in another. Amethyst often shows colour zoning in bands. Purple sapphire sparkles more and feels heavier than amethyst of the same size. Kunzite is the palest and shows pink when viewed down its length.
What to check
- Amethyst and kunzite: both can fade with long exposure to strong sun; store them in the dark.
- Tanzanite and kunzite: both have cleavage, so avoid hard knocks and ultrasonic cleaners.
- Purple sapphire: ask about heating; see our purple sapphire guide.

What drives value in purple stones
For amethyst, a deep, even purple with red or blue flashes and no brown is worth most. Tanzanite is valued for strong, saturated violet-blue, and the paler grades sit much lower. Purple sapphire is judged on brightness and evenness, kunzite on a clear, noticeable pink-lilac.
