The white stones and how they differ
| Stone | Hardness (Mohs) | Look | Typical treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moti | 2.5–4.5 | Organic, soft lustre | Sometimes bleached |
| Moonstone | 6–6.5 | Milky with a floating blue-white glow | Usually untreated |
| Opal | 5.5–6.5 | White body with flashes of colour | Usually untreated |
| White topaz | 8 | Clear, bright sparkle | Usually untreated |
| White agate | 6.5–7 | Milky, translucent, waxy | Sometimes bleached |
| Dur-e-Najaf and Moh-e-Najaf | 7 | Clear quartz; Moh-e-Najaf has fine needles | Untreated |
What to check
- Pearl: look for deep, even lustre. Rub gently against a tooth: natural pearl feels slightly gritty, imitation smooth.
- Opal: keep it away from sudden heat and long soaking; some opals absorb water and clear temporarily.
- Dur-e-Najaf: glass imitations often show round bubbles; see rock crystal or glass.
- White topaz: hard but has cleavage, so avoid sharp knocks.

What drives value in white stones
Pearl is valued for lustre, a round shape and a clean surface. Moonstone is valued for a strong, central blue-white glow on a clear body. Opal is judged by the brightness and range of its colour flashes. White topaz and Dur-e-Najaf are valued for clarity and a well-cut sparkle, while Moh-e-Najaf is judged by its needles.
