June Birthstone: Pearl (Moti) and Moonstone جون
In short: June's birthstones in our range are pearl (Moti) and moonstone, two soft white gems that glow rather than sparkle. Pearl is an organic gem grown inside a mollusc, while moonstone is a feldspar with a floating blue-white sheen. Pearl suits gentle, occasional wear, and moonstone is a little tougher for everyday rings.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
Meaning and history
Pearls were among the first gems people wore, and the waters of the Gulf were famous for pearl diving for centuries. Moonstone takes its name from its soft, moonlike glow. In Vedic astrology pearl is the stone of the Moon (Chandra), and moonstone is traditionally linked with it too. Alexandrite is a third June stone on the modern list.
How to choose a pearl
- Lustre. Good pearls show sharp, bright reflections. Chalky or dull pearls have thin nacre or poor quality.
- Surface. A few small marks are normal; deep pits and peeling are not.
- Shape. Round is the most valued. Oval and baroque shapes cost less and have their own charm.

How to choose a moonstone
Tilt the stone: the sheen should glide across the dome as it moves. A blue sheen on a nearly transparent body is the most prized; white sheen on a milky body is more common and costs less. Browse moonstone and pearl, or compare the stronger colour flash of labradorite.
Real or fake: what to check
- Rub a pearl gently against the edge of a tooth. Real pearl feels slightly gritty; glass and plastic feel smooth.
- Look at the drill hole of a bead. A coating that peels away from a glass or shell core shows an imitation.
- "Opalite" glass sold as moonstone glows blue and orange at every angle, with no gliding sheen, and often shows bubbles.
Care
Pearl is only 2.5–4.5 on the Mohs scale and reacts to acids. Put it on last, after perfume, attar, hairspray and make-up, and wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing. Moonstone is 6–6.5 and has cleavage, so avoid hard knocks. Store both apart from harder stones. Read keeping moonstone's glow and choosing pearl or moonstone.
A June gift
Pearls have a long place in Pakistani bridal jewellery, from moti malas to pearl-drop earrings, so a single pearl is a natural gift for a bride or a mooh dikhai. Moonstone suits a light summer outfit and a June birthday, and either makes a gentle Eid gift for a mother or daughter.
