What the lab checks on topaz

  • Irradiation and heat: almost all blue topaz is irradiated and heated; some pink topaz is heated from other colours.
  • Coating: thin surface coatings that create rainbow or strong colours.
  • Identification: separating topaz from citrine, aquamarine, yellow sapphire and glass.
  • Synthetics: rare in topaz, but checked.
